Festivals

The major Festivals observed in the Regions are:

Ga Homowo:  which literally connotes ‘hooting at hunger’ or, in other words ensuring food sufficiency for the coming year.  the Homowo festival is celebrated in August in three of the Region’s five Districts, namely Ga District, Accra Metropolitan Area and Tema Municipality.  there are however, pockets of areas within the AMA such as James Town, which celebrate Odwira Festival.  the various towns within the Ga State celebrate the Homowo Festival of different dates.  History has it that this arrangement was designed to ensure that most sections of Ga State were battle-ready even during the Festival, to defend the state from external aggression.

The Kpledzoo Festival is celebrated between March and April by the Chief and people of Tema Traditional Area.  it is more or less a fertiity festival since it is believed that through the purification of the traditional stool the shrine and the cleansing of the gods, barren women who present themselves for the ritual are later blessed with children.

There is the Asafotufiam Festival of Ada Traditional Area which is also celebrated in August with great pomp and pageantry.

Nmayem Festival is another major festival celebrated in the Region by the people of Shai and Osudoku Traditional Areas.
