Accra has been Ghana’s undisputed Capital since March 1877 when the National Capital was moved from Cape Coast, and the City’s fart-multiplying population seems to be living to the origin of its name Nkran or an army of ants.
The City of Accra traces its roots to 1650 with the construction by the Dutch, of Fort Crevecouer, now Ussher Fort. The City extended its boundary in 1661 with construction by the Danes of Christianborg Castle where several Centuries later, the ashes of George Padmore, the great Pan Africanist and Freedom Fighter were intended. In 1673, the British constuctedFort Jamesat James Town where in the struggle for Independence, Ghana’s First President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was imprisoned for about a year.
Accra can be said to be a Tripple-Paradox City due to the complex nature of its 3-tier administration and manner the City appears to have come to terms with the versatility of its status.
The City is at one and same time the National Capital, the Capital of the Greater Accra Region and the Capital of the Accra Metropolitan Area. As a National Capital, certain aspects of the City’s administration fall under the purview of National entities whereas the same area falls within the responsibility of one to the 13 Sub-Metros of the Greater Accra Region Co-ordination Council. |
