Geographical Features
The western part of the Region is characterised by the Middle Devonian formation which is faulted in parts and subject to seism activity. The soils are characterized by low organic and nutrient contents with thin or shallow top soils which effectively limit the capacity for crops production.
It is predomination low lying with undulating coastal plain except where it is intruded upon by a section of the Akwapim Ranges and the Shai Hills. In addition to the Volta River, the other major river is River Densu but from there are small seasonal into the flowing mostly fron the Akwapim Ranges into the sea through numerous lagoons.
The temperature range in the Region 20 – 30 with low temperatures occurring around August and high temperatures in March just before the rainy season. the Region’s annual rainfall ranges from 635mm along the coast, to 1140mm to the northern parts. practically, the entire annual rainfall of the Region occurs I less than 80 days, a situation which does not enhance rain-fed farming. |
