Economic Infrastructure
As in Ghana generally, the Region’s economic or productive infrastructure is embodied in Roads and Highways, Telecommunications, Water Supply, Power and Fuel.
with the physical Accra-Tema conurbation, the Region has direct and effective road links to Western Ghana, Eastern Ghana and Northern Ghana and, with the outside World through the Tema Harbour and Kotoka International Airport. There is also a rail link with Western Ghana and the Mid-belt and Telecommunications link with the outside world through Microwave and Very High frequency Radio Telephone Terminal in Accra, and Super High Frequency Radio Terminal at Tema. Accra is also the central link for the Television Stations in the Country.
Water Supply in Greater Accra Region is not evenly distributed in that the Region’s two major water supply systems serve almost exclusively the Accra and Tema urban populations.
The major source of fuel and power in the Region is hydro-electric power and the Region consumes about half the total electricity generated in the country, virtually in Accra-Tema are alone. There is a high preference for the use of Liquefied Gas by Charcoal and fuel wood is still commonly used in the rural areas. |
